Castorocauda lutrasimilis by paleosir Castorocauda lutrasimilis by paleosir
A middle jurassic docodont that is semi-aquatic.
It's name means ''beaver tailed that looks like an otter.'' and it's fitting.

Castorocauda literally looks like an otter with a beaver tail.
It was rough 42cm long, and 500 to 800 grams heavy, very big for a jurassic mammaliform.

It would have hunted fish and amphibians such as Chunerpeton in the lakes and rivers of the Tiaojishan formation (there were plenty of lakes there).

Together with Docofossor and Volaticotherium, Castorocauda shatters the notion of ''mesozoic mammal = unspecialized tiny shrew'', because Castorocauda really was equally as specialized as an otter.
Furthermore, it also shows signs of being fossorial, so it probably dug burrows in the riverbanks.

More of a beaver-otter, I don't see a bill on it. :P (Lick)

Eh, just called it "platypus otter" because of its beaver-like tail and its ability to dig combined.

Eutriconodonts and docodonts in general are so specialized they shatter the notion.
